Manager, Research Engineering

We are looking for a Research Engineering Manager who will support us in our mission of helping people get jobs across the globe, with a particular focus on the Japanese market and our product offering here. You will leverage your skills to manage and guide a team of Research Engineers to identify business opportunities, architect and develop software, solve a range of business problems and build products that will support Indeed’s growth plans in Japan.

You are comfortable wearing multiple hats across several fields including software engineering, engineering management, data analysis and critical thinking. You have a good understanding of the overall business and market-specific contexts, great communication skills, and are passionate about the internet & its economics, particularly the power to help people get jobs. 

We would like to see that you are resourceful and enthusiastic about solving technical and business problems, with a strong background in technical delivery. We want to see that you can go beyond writing code and running the numbers to be able to interpret relevant information into actionable insights. You have a good overall business sense to solve real-world problems and collaborate with people from technical and non-technical backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

• Manage a team of developers with responsibilities including: routine one-on-ones, performance reviews, career development, technical leadership, project management, and more.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously within your team at every stage, from ideation and requirements gathering through delivery and maintenance.
• Perform in-depth business analysis on projects to share results and insights to stakeholders.
• Collaborate with teams and functions across the company (Engineering, Product, International, Finance, Legal, Sales/CS, and Marketing) to execute initiatives and tasks
• Add to the team’s infrastructure of algorithms, automation, data mining & quantitative business analytics

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree majoring in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Math, Statistics or a related analytics field, or equivalent industry experience
• Highly resourceful with a curious attitude and innate interest in solving business problems in collaboration with others.
• A good understanding of business needs outside of engineering, with a passion for seeing results from your work.
• Minimum of 5 years of software engineering experience with a minimum 2 years of engineering management experience 
• Ability to write production code when needed as well as mentor team members to do the same
• Solid understanding of software engineering principles (design patterns, OOP, best practices, etc) and experience architecting web-based applications.
• Experience with relational databases (SQL) or noSQL storage system
• Ability to define a product roadmap or strategy in partnership with product managers.
• Business level proficiency in Japanese.

Nice to have:

• Experience with Python, Java, NodeJS, React, or Typescript would be a plus

The base salary range represents the low and high end of the Indeed salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Indeed's total compensation package for employees.
