Overview

Conduct theoretical research regarding ion trap quantum computing and QEC(quantum error correction) while working closely with hardware experts. The topics include qubit gate design and optimization, quantum error correction and quantum algorithms for near-term applications. We are specifically looking for quantum information experts who can develop, analyze and benchmark quantum error correction protocols that are optimized for distributed quantum computing using trapped ions.

Detail

  • Define and quantify a full error budget for ion-trap quantum computers, covering gates, measurement, and ion transport
  • Identify dominant error sources from experimental data and translate them into actionable improvements for QEC design and hardware
  • Design and validate quantum error correction (QEC) codes and protocols tailored to realistic hardware noise
  • Evaluate code performance (thresholds, logical error rates, resource requirements) to assess practical feasibility
  • Optimize QCCD-specific ion transport operations (splitting, merging, shuttling) and model their impact on errors
  • Develop fault-tolerant logical gates and approaches such as magic state distillation
  • Explore error mitigation techniques in distributed settings, including entanglement generation and distillation
  • Collaborate closely with experimental teams to implement and refine QEC protocols on real hardware

Qualifications

Ph.D. / Doctor / Master in Physics or Quantum Information etc

Required Skills

  • PhD in Physics, Quantum Information, or a closely related field (Master's candidates with exceptional QEC research experience may be considered)
  • Deep expertise in quantum error correction theory — surface codes, color codes, concatenated codes, or similar topological/stabilizer codes
  • Understanding of fault-tolerant quantum computation and threshold theorems
  • Proficiency in numerical simulation (Python, MATLAB, Julia, or equivalent) for QEC and quantum circuit simulation

Qubitcore is a deep tech startup originating from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and founded in 2024.

The company is developing and delivering next-generation ion trap quantum computers designed to tackle problems that are computationally intensive, in fields such as drug discovery, climate modeling, financial simulations, and generative AI.

Its mission is to bring quantum computing into real-world applications with greater speed and precision.

Qubitcore’s headquarters is located in Yokohama, while its R&D center operates within the OIST campus in Okinawa. Currently, the team consists of 6 members, working closely with OIST to realize Japan's first distributed quantum computer.

Qubitcore's distributed architecture connects multiple quantum processing units (QPUs) via photonic links to form a high-performance, networked quantum system. This approach enables large-scale quantum computation that was previously impractical, opening new frontiers in quantum technology.
