For approximately the first six months after joining, you will initially work as a Researcher or Engineer, engaging in quantum computing R&D and experiments.
Through hands-on work including experiments, experimental setup, quantum device evaluation and characterization, experimental data analysis, simulations, and research documentation, you will develop a deep understanding of our technologies and R&D projects.
After this initial period, you will transition into the role of R&D Project Manager, taking responsibility for planning, driving, and managing quantum hardware development projects. This is a key position that connects researchers, engineers, external research institutions, and other stakeholders, helping bridge technology development with commercialization and real-world implementation.
Responsibilities
First ~6 Months: Researcher / Engineer
- Conduct R&D and experiments related to quantum hardware
- Design and build experimental setups and conduct simulations
- Evaluate and characterize quantum devices
- Acquire and analyze experimental data
- Document research results and findings
- Contribute to academic publications and conference presentations, as well as the creation of intellectual property
Thereafter: R&D Project Manager
- Plan quantum hardware development projects, define milestones, and manage progress
- Coordinate and drive projects involving researchers, engineers, and external research institutions
- Plan and manage R&D budgets, including research equipment, prototyping materials, and external development costs
- Plan, manage progress, and oversee deliverables for government- and public-sector-funded R&D projects
- Support the preparation of grant and subsidy applications, technical reports, deliverables, and audit-related documentation
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to support the commercialization and real-world implementation of research outcomes
- Report project progress to management and support strategic decision-making
Required Skills & Experience
- Willingness and ability to relocate to Okinawa, Japan
- Ability to communicate professionally in both Japanese and English
- Basic knowledge of quantum physics, quantum optics, and quantum computing
- Research or development experience in at least one of the following areas:
- AMO experiments, lasers, optics, cavity QED, UHV, electronic control, etc.
- MEMS design and microfabrication
- Data analysis, simulation, or programming using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools
- Strong motivation to drive R&D in collaboration with members across multiple technical domains
- Strong motivation to structure research topics and technical challenges, set goals and plans, and drive projects forward
Prior experience in project management is not required. We welcome candidates who want to leverage their R&D experience and eventually lead R&D projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Research or experimental experience in AMO, atomic physics, or quantum hardware
- Hands-on experience with ion traps, UHV, lasers, cryostats, or related technologies
- Experience in MEMS and microfabrication
- Experience leading or driving research projects
- Experience conducting collaborative research and working across multiple technical disciplines
- Experience working in international research teams
- Experience compiling and communicating research findings through academic papers, presentations, or other outputs

About Qubitcore
Qubitcore is a deep tech startup originating from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and founded in 2024.
The company is developing and delivering next-generation ion trap quantum computers designed to tackle problems that are computationally intensive, in fields such as drug discovery, climate modeling, financial simulations, and generative AI.
Its mission is to bring quantum computing into real-world applications with greater speed and precision.
Qubitcore’s headquarters is located in Yokohama, while its R&D center operates within the OIST campus in Okinawa. Currently, the team consists of 6 members, working closely with OIST to realize Japan's first distributed quantum computer.
Qubitcore's distributed architecture connects multiple quantum processing units (QPUs) via photonic links to form a high-performance, networked quantum system. This approach enables large-scale quantum computation that was previously impractical, opening new frontiers in quantum technology.
