About Ubie

Ubie is a med-tech startup founded by a doctor and an engineer. Their goal is to help guide patients to the right treatment at the right time using technology.

They accomplish this with a pair of products: the first is an AI-powered medical interview system (“Ubie”) in use by hundreds of prestigious medical institutions across Japan and Singapore. They pair this with a separate patient-facing app that helps users determine what ailment they may be facing by analyzing their symptoms from home.

Ultimately the use of their products enables hospitals to streamline their outpatient workflow using AI and helps doctors allocate their time as efficiently as possible. Needless to say, this is absolutely crucial given the COVID-19 pandemic and Japan’s aging population.

Ubie also collaborates actively with partners outside of medicine (life sciences, wellness) to develop an ideal health ecosystem. In 2020 Ubie received the “Japan Service Award” for innovations in reforming the work style of doctors.

The company showed their commitment to helping people when the COVID-19 pandemic began: they made their flagship product 100% free for over a year. Their product helps improve the efficiency of doctors’ tasks, so it’s effective in helping prevent the medical system from getting overwhelmed.

Ubie also received additional funding of nearly $20 million in 2020, and took their first step toward global expansion — they set up an office in Singapore. With many cultural and geographic similarities to Japan, this was a logical next step for the firm in their goal to expand throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Ultimately Ubie hopes to impart their vision, “Hello, Healthy World”, to all of the world’s people.

Ubie’s expertise has even been recognized by the Japanese government. JETRO (Japan’s External Trade Organization) selected Ubie to help them in their efforts toward achieving digital transformation in the Asia region.

They plan to continue to focus on improving both their consumer and hospital-facing products starting with their AI disease prediction engine and keep building more products.

Japanese Language Policy
Japanese is not required for engineers, but it is desirable. As a customer-centric company building products for Japanese customers, Japanese skills are required for designers in order to do users research, product discovery etc.

Remote Work
Ubie is a remote-first company.

Engineers are free to work from anywhere in Asia / Oceania (to ensure overlap with the JST time zone). Everyone’s free to work 100% remotely, or you can work from the company’s Tokyo office (as long as there’s no state of emergency in effect).

Ubie’s committed to their remote work style, so they intend to keep it in place even once COVID-19 is no longer a concern.

There may be times when those who are able to come to the office — and it’s safe to do so — are asked to join in-person meetings. For example, monthly business progress sharing meetings or quarterly off-sites may be held, but these meetings will be infrequent.
Work style
Ubie has adopted a flex time system with no core time.

They work sustainable 8-hour days and aim to be the most comfortable workplace among venture start-ups in Japan.

They have no set start or finish times — it’s completely flexible. Each member is free to choose their own hours, but pretty much everyone’s offline by 7pm or so. Ubie wants to optimize for output, not time spent.

The business side of the company works slightly more regular hours, usually 10:00 to 7:00PM, but many engineers prefer to work in the morning or later at night. Some part-time members have other commitments so they work on Ubie projects outside of normal work hours.
