English-speaking Gynecologists in Japan: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and more
Receiving proper healthcare when living abroad can be a serious concern for many women.
The challenge isn’t just about overcoming the ever-present language barrier but feeling comfortable discussing intimate health matters in a fairly conservative culture.
That’s why we’ve prepared this guide. Below, you’ll find a list of English-speaking gynecologists from Tokyo and other major Japanese cities who can give you the medical care you need.
English Speaking Gynecologist Tokyo
According to our research, the following obstetrics and gynecology clinics provide services in English and are highly favored among foreign residents.
Ebine Women’s Clinic in Minato-ku
Shirokane Takanawa Ebine Women’s Clinic, founded by the English-speaking Dr. Ebine, employs an all-female physician staff to make their female patients as comfortable as possible.
The clinic provides comprehensive services beyond routine gynecological exams, including infertility treatments, adolescent gynecology, infant care, breast and postpartum care, and cancer screening and prevention procedures.
Ebine Women’s Clinic offers consultations throughout the week and on the weekends, so you can rely on it for any gynecology and obstetrics-related emergency care needs.
Located at 1-2-17 Takanawa, Minato-ku, here’s Ebine Women’s Clinic’s English website.
Nagahashi Obstetrics and Gynecology in Toshima-ku
Located in the Toshima ward, Nagashi Obstetrics and Gynecology is also known as the Nagahashi Ladies Clinic. This is another great clinic for regular checkups, as both the director of the clinic, who’s also a doctor here, and the staff speak English perfectly well.
Unlike Ebine, however, the clinic is open only six days a week with Sundays off, and therefore can’t assist patients with emergency cases, such as childbirth.
The clinic does offer prenatal and regular gynecology checkups, as well as infertility treatments and medication prescriptions.
While the on-site English support is great, the clinic’s website is unfortunately only available in Japanese. However, you can simply use the translate function in your browser to check the opening and closing times and the full list of services offered.
The clinic is located six minutes away on foot from the Shiinamachi Station.

AIIKU Clinic in Minato-ku
AIIKU Clinic in Minato-ku isn’t just a women’s health clinic, as it offers a wide range of services in internal medicine, pediatrics, mental health, and even dental. Of course, the clinic is always accessible for your regular OB-GYN checkups.
In fact, if you’re looking for a clinic without making an appointment, this should be your go-to. The clinic accepts walk-in visits anytime and is open every day of the week except Sundays.
One of the clinic's directors, Dr. Sakamoto, has professional experience in the United States and speaks English. Needless to say, the clinic is very accommodating to foreign patients.
Thanks to the extensive facilities of the AIIKU clinic, they offer surgical procedures and provide healthcare for women on a regular basis.
The clinic is located at 5-6-8 Minamiazabu, Minato-ku and their website has an English option.
K-Ladies Clinic in Shinjuku
Located in Shinjuku, K-Ladies Clinic also offers a selection of English-speaking doctors and nurses.
This easy-to-reach clinic accepts walk-in visits, so it can be your go-to clinic for women’s health-related emergencies. Another point goes to K-Ladies Clinic in terms of emergency, as the clinic is open every day of the week, even on Sundays (they just close one hour early).
The clinic offers the full spectrum of women’s health services, such as contraception, management of abnormal pap smears, STIs, urinary tract infections, and abnormal bleeding cases.
You can reach K-Ladies Clinic in three minutes on foot from the West exit of JR Shinjuku Station.
Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic in Minato-ku
Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic is a fully-equipped clinic that offers services in a wide variety of medical fields, such as pediatrics, mental health, internal medicine, and women’s health.
The clinic offers full English support to foreign patients, and their OB-GYN department is no different. Among the services offered here are breast examinations, cancer screenings, pap smears, and hormone therapies.
The extensive facilities available make it possible for Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic to also offer pregnancy care and childbirth support.
Consultation times are available all days of the week except for Sundays. To book an appointment, you can use the clinic’s online booking system.
The clinic is only an 11-minute walk away from the Daimon Station on the Asakusa Line.
English Speaking Gynecologist Osaka
In our previous posts, we talked about how Osaka is one of the best cities for developers due to its vibrant tech scene and large English-speaking community. As one of the major cities in Japan, the city also has ample English-speaking support in the medical field, particularly in women's health.
Here are some of the best English-speaking gynecologists and women’s clinics in Osaka.
Tennoji Chihiro Women’s Clinic
Located in Tennoji, Osaka, Tennoji Chihiro Women’s Clinic is the founding director Dr. Hiromi Ugaki’s passion so much so that she commissioned her favorite artist for the clinic’s logo.
With over twenty years of experience, Dr. Ugaki provides full English support to foreign patients in Osaka. The clinic is open 5 days a week and is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.
While you can make a reservation on the phone, you can also walk in for most of the day. Make sure to check the clinic’s website for more information about opening and closing times.
The best thing about Tennoji Chihiro Women’s Clinic is that it offers all services related to gynecology and obstetrics, including childbirth and prenatal care.
You can reach the clinic by taking a short walk from Exit 5 and 6 of the Tennoji Station on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line.
La Quole in Hommachi
Located in Hommachi Chuo-ku, La Quole is run by Dr. Takino Toshiko, a specialist in Women’s Health and Gynecology. The doctor herself speaks English perfectly, and the clinic goes above and beyond to serve foreign patients.
La Quole offers the full spectrum of OB-GYN services, from the treatment of infectious diseases to regular scans and checkups. It’s open six days a week, with Sunday being the only day off.
The best part about La Quole is that the clinic also offers video consultations. This means that you can see the doctor for minor things like discussing the test results and re-prescription of medication without ever leaving your home.
You can get more information about the services offered at the practice and easily make reservations online. The website has an English section for easier navigation and appointment booking.
Kisaki Clinic in Yodogawa-ku
If you’re looking for a clinic you can show up for emergencies, Kisaki Clinic in the Yodogawa ward accepts walk-ins and appointments.
With English-speaking doctors available on the spot, Kisaki Clinic is a full-range women’s health clinic. Among the services offered are pre and postnatal care, emergency contraception and abortions, breast surgery, as well as regular scans and checkups for breast and cervical cancer.

Kisaki Clinic is located at Jusanhigashi 2-7-8 Yodogawa-ku 〒532-0023 and is a 2-minute walk from the Juzo Station.
English Speaking Gynecologist Kyoto: Egawa Clinic in Higashiyama-ku

Kyoto, another vibrant major city in Japan, also has a decently large foreign community. So, you can find a variety of options when it comes to English-speaking health support.
One of the best in the area, however, is the Egawa Clinic. This clinic is run by the director Dr. Haruto Egawa, who’s an OB-GYN specialist. Dr. Egawa speaks English well and accepts foreign patients from all over Kansai.
Unfortunately, Egawa Clinic only accepts patients with appointments, but booking one is easy both online and by phone. The clinic's website isn’t in English, but booking an appointment through the online system should be fairly easy with the help of a translator extension.
At the clinic, Dr. Egawa offers the full range of services when it comes to gynecology, obstetrics, and all things women’s health, including operations and procedures for aesthetic purposes.
The clinic is open every day except for Thursdays and Sundays, and reaching the clinic from Exit 2 of the Sanjo Keihan Station takes only a minute on foot.
English Speaking Gynecologist Yokohama
Yokohama is another major Japanese city with a busy startup and tech scene. Being among the select cities that issue startup visas, the city is no short of foreign residents.
As you’d expect, access to healthcare is pretty simple for foreign residents here, and the city has a selection of English-speaking OB-GYN specialists to choose from.
Let’s look at a few good ones where you can book an appointment right away.
Yokohama City Minato Red Cross Hospital in Naka-ku
Yokohama City Minato Red Cross Hospital is a large hospital located in Naka-ku. It has several departments, one of which is Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The main draw of the Red Cross Hospital is that it’s JMIP-qualified (Japan Medical Service Accreditation for International Patients). This means that the hospital is equipped to serve international patients in multiple languages, including English.
The hospital requires reservations by phone. You can find more information on the hospital’s website, which has an English translation. Keep in mind that consultations are only possible on weekdays.
Getting here on foot from the nearest train station, “Motomachi-Chukagai” on the Minatomirai line, takes a little longer, as it’s about an 18-minute walk. So, we recommend taking the bus instead, as the Minato Red Cross Hospital bus stop is only three minutes away.
Ikuaikai Ladies Clinic in Naka-ku
Ikuaikai Ladies Clinic has quite a history. Since opening in 1945, the clinic has been accepting women patients exclusively.
By exclusive, we mean “men aren’t allowed” as even the waiting room is “female only.” This is so that the patients feel completely safe, which is why the doctors and the rest of the staff are also female.
The clinic offers a wide range of services in the field of gynecology, such as prescription of pills and vaccinations, STI testing and treatments, and pre and regular gynecological exams and screenings. Fertility problems are addressed and treated here as well.
Ikuaikai Ladies Clinic is great for foreign patients because it has English-speaking doctors on staff and an English section for foreign patients on their web page.
The clinic is open every day except for Sundays and Thursdays. However, appointments are only possible by booking ahead via phone call. You can reach the clinic from the station from the Keikyu Line, Hinode-cho Station, in a couple of minutes on foot.
Concluding Words About Visiting The Gynecologist in Japan

As a foreigner living in Japan, going to a gynecologist for the first time can feel daunting. So, let’s close out our post by listing a few handy tips so you’ll know how to act and what you might need to bring.
For one, having insurance is important, as gynecology exams without one can be quite pricey! So, bring your insurance card, and you’re all set.
Secondly, abortion isn’t covered by national health insurance and is only possible until the end of the 21st week of pregnancy.
Please be aware that abortions in Japan can be expensive. What’s more, you might even need the father’s written consent in some cases.
Another thing to be aware of is the difference in modesty. In Japan, there’s a bigger emphasis on modesty.
So, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to wear special crotchless scrubs for the examination or if the doctor pulls a curtain across your body during the exam to prevent eye contact. These are done for your safety and comfort.
Lastly, remember that the advice you receive may not always be ideal, and seeking another doctor is always an option.
While this is all we have for this guide, our other post contains even more English-speaking hospitals in Tokyo.
