About the company
DeepX is a dynamic tech company in Tokyo that automates heavy equipment machinery. Some of our key achievements are the automation of point-to-point operations of a mobile crane in cooperation with Tadano, one of the largest manufacturers of mobile cranes in Japan, and the automation of an excavator in cooperation with Fujita, one of the major general contractors.
With our technology, we are addressing the problem of labor shortage, which is one of the most severe challenges in Japan.
DeepX is highly international, hosting engineers from both Japan and all over the world, and our internal language is English. We believe that organizational strength comes from the diversity of ideas and welcome competent individuals from all backgrounds. We understand that a healthy work-life balance is crucial for company performance, so we don't expect overtime and encourage open communication with employees.
About the role
The Core System team at DeepX builds the software platform and tooling that underpin our heavy-machinery automation applications. This includes the base robotics framework, sensor & hardware abstraction layers, integration infrastructure & middleware components, and system-level orchestration.
As a Core System Engineer, you will design how the automation system comes together, build the integration components that make it work, and harden it for real-world operation, including hands-on validation at Genba (現場), where safety is paramount. We're looking for a strong software engineer with generalist robotics knowledge: someone who can dive deep across the stack, reason about system behavior end to end, and collaborate closely with other domain teams to deploy production-grade automation systems.
Core responsibilities
- Architect and implement application-level orchestration: state machines, behavior trees, and high-level system behavior management, including safety and error handling mechanisms.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to lead integration of perception, control, and planning modules with hardware and the wider system, ensuring the pieces work together reliably at runtime.
- Conduct real-world validation of your work through field deployments and comprehensive hardware testing.
- Build and maintain logging, monitoring, and introspection utilities to enable efficient mission ops and lower integration costs.
- Develop machine platform components such as ROS2 drivers and parsers for proprietary and third-party hardware.
- Design and own the ROS2 node architecture, interfaces, launch & configuration packages that DeepX's automation applications are built on.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Robotics, or a closely related engineering field.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including practical experience working in a highly-collaborative codebase.
- Professional experience in C++ and proficiency in Python.
- Experience developing in a Linux environment.
- Hands-on experience with robotics frameworks (ROS/ROS2 or other equivalent framework).
- A working understanding across core robotics domains: hardware, perception, control, planning (deep expertise in any single domain is a plus, not a requirement).
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to proactively engage with various stakeholders across teams.
- Proven ability to manage tasks effectively, translating business and project needs into clear, actionable engineering steps.
- Proficiency in English.
Preferred qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to lead the design of scalable robotics applications, particularly those built on ROS2.
- Ability to operate autonomously and drive technical decisions with only high-level direction.
- Experience defining and leading robust testing strategies to ensure system reliability and stability.
- Hands-on field-testing experience validating system integration, stability, safety, and performance.
- Experience with hardware driver and low-level infrastructure development.
- Working knowledge of CAN bus communication, PLC programming and industrial interface/protocol design.
- Fundamental network protocol knowledge (e.g., TCP/IP, UDP, socket communications).
- Good understanding of containerization concepts, with practical experience using Docker.
- Familiarity with Agile and the Scrum methodology.
- Proficiency in Japanese.
