Lead Frontend Engineer — Digital Bank — Tokyo

Abbeal is an international IT consulting firm (France, Japan, Canada) placing senior engineers on high-impact product teams. Through Abbeal, lead the customer-facing web application of a from-scratch digital bank in Tokyo.

Context

You will own the customer-facing web app of a greenfield digital bank in Tokyo — a joint venture between a leading Japanese FinTech and a major banking group. Greenfield React + TypeScript architecture, with a strong functional-programming and type-driven engineering culture. International, English-friendly team; Japanese is not required.

Your Mission

• Own the architecture and delivery of the customer-facing web application
• Build a greenfield React + TypeScript codebase with a strong type-driven, functional approach (Effect-TS)
• Design robust integrations against REST / OpenAPI banking APIs
• Set frontend standards (testing, CI/CD, performance) and scale the frontend as the product grows
• Mentor and grow the frontend team

Profile

• Currently based in Japan with valid work authorization — no relocation or visa sponsorship from overseas for this role
• 8+ years in frontend engineering, expert in React + TypeScript
• Strong functional-programming and type-driven mindset (Effect-TS or similar a strong plus)
• Experience with TanStack, REST / OpenAPI integrations, and large-scale SPA architecture
• Fintech or regulated-product experience a plus
• Fluent English; Japanese not required

Location and Setup

Tokyo — hybrid. Permanent or contract options depending on profile. Hired and supported by Abbeal (visa sponsorship + Mobbeal expat support). Indicative range ¥9M–¥15M/year depending on experience.
