The team
The Job Search Back End team builds and operates Indeed's flagship job search engine, handling billions of requests per month over the world's freshest job data with high performance and reliability. Our focus is to continuously scale and improve this platform, and to help the broader family of Indeed engineering teams integrate their features with ease. As the nexus of job search, we see and guide the "big picture".

Your job
As a Software Engineering Manager on the Job Search Back End team at Indeed, you will guide a team of talented, professional, and driven engineers to improve job search platforms at Indeed using industry best practices.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver product and engineering solutions.
- Evaluate team members and coach them to improve their performance.
- Advise team members on career direction.
- Steward a culture of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Identify and drive process improvements to make your team more effective.
- Provide thoughtful guidance to teams in the broader organization.
- Influence and drive technical direction and product goals.

You understand that the best managers serve their teams, removing roadblocks and helping individual contributors establish autonomy and ownership. You know how to encourage engineering teams and earn the respect of talented software developers. You create opportunities for your team to develop new skills and advance their careers.
You are equally happy talking algorithms and data structures as you are about career growth and the engineering process. You want to be in the mix technically while providing leadership to your teams. You are comfortable learning new things on the fly and you help others balance scalability, speed to market, and long-term maintainability.
Lastly, you understand that finding employment is more difficult than it should be, and you want to help people get jobs.
Requirements:
- BS in Computer Science or related area, or relevant work experience.
- Experience guiding a team to deliver high-performance, distributed systems.
- Success in establishing new engineering practices and measuring the impact.
- Experience with evaluating team members' performance.
- Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Java, Kotlin, C#, Python, C++, or related.
- Solid knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and data storage at scale.
Nice to have:
- Success with managing partially or fully remote teams.
- Solid track record of coaching team members through promotions and career goals.
- A broad understanding of API technologies such as GraphQL, REST, gRPC, or related.
- Experience building cloud-based solutions.
- Experience with information retrieval. For example, strong knowledge of search engine technology such as Elasticsearch, Solr, Lucene, or related.
