Our financial data platform, Moneytree LINK, enables individuals and businesses to share their confidential financial information with trusted third parties, such as financial institutions and fintech service providers.

Our technology is used by major banks, accounting software companies and fintech companies in Japan, including Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group, TKC and Yayoi, and other 60 enterprise clients. Our apps are also used and trusted by millions of individuals.

LINK Platform team is in charge of building the client-facing LINK products, which include RESTful APIs that are used serve financial data to our customers, as well as mobile and Web SDKs that our customers use to build their own solutions on top of Moneytree platform. As a full stack engineer, you will work on architecting, building and securing our backend APIs as well as Web SDKs that power our client solutions.

You will spend time on the following:

Designing and building RESTful APIs in Ruby.

Building Web UIs and SDKs in TypeScript and React.

Manage server-side infrastructure in Heroku and AWS.

Collaborate with other engineers on the team to design, build, and maintain above systems.

Instrument and maintain our production systems to ensure a reliable and observable production environment.

Apply technical expertise to investigate and resolve customer software issues related to LINK products.

Learning the finance domain in-depth, including: banking, insurance, e-commerce, credit cards and other types of financial institutions.

Remain up to date with the terminology, concepts and best practices for coding Web apps.

Communicate with our stakeholders to understand their needs and experiences, identify tasks, provide estimates and meet production deadlines.

Suggest and implement new solutions for our customers.

What we're looking for:

Ownership of our Web systems end to end.

Knowledge of Ruby on Rails, TypeScript and React.

Knowledge of Web API authentication schemes such as OpenID and OAuth.

In-depth understanding of how Web applications work end to end (HTTP, Web services, REST APIs).

Understanding general concepts of distributed systems (microservices, message queues, load balancing, caching, etc.).

Experience working with any public cloud provider, such as AWS or GCP is welcomed.

Experience integrating Web applications into native mobile applications (using WebView) is welcomed.

Ability to deliver complete work integrated with the larger system, with test coverage and documentation necessary to achieve high quality.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Ability to perform in a team environment.

Ability to learn new software and technologies quickly.

You always advocate for technical excellence and can suggest practical tradeoffs where required.

You will communicate in English on a daily basis. Proficiency in Japanese is welcomed, but not strictly required.

About Moneytree

Moneytree is a fin-tech start-up founded by three foreign entrepreneurs in Tokyo. Their Moneytree Link product provides a "utility layer for connecting financial services" that serves banks and other fin-tech companies, but they also have a popular consumer app that helps people manage their finances. They're a truly international company with an English-first environment and a high technical skill level for engineers, so it sounds like a really great place to work!

Salary
Moneytree's salary structure is designed to offer a base salary along with stock options. Stock options are still a relative rarity in Japan, so Moneytree is one of a reasonably small list of Japanese companies offering them.
Japanese Language Policy
Japanese is not required for engineers, but it is desirable.

As a customer-centric company building products for Japanese customers, Japanese fluency is required for product managers and product designers in order to do users research, product discovery etc.

Paid Leave
Moneytree's paid time off policy is awesome.

They offer 20 paid holidays in addition to 10 sick/care leave days.

The legal minimum number of paid time off days in Japan is 10 for an employee's first year, so this is what you'll get at the majority of companies. The fact that Moneytree doubles this to 20 really makes them stand out from other companies in Tokyo.

And then there's their sick day policy. Since these aren't legally mandated in Japan, most companies don't have them at all. Moneytree really goes above and beyond here with 10.

Engineer Interview Process
This may depend somewhat on the position but in general, the steps are as follows:
- CV screening (+ survey to fill out for some positions)
- Casual screening meeting (onsite or remote)
- Pair programming
- Topgrading
- Provisional offer + reference check
Remote Work
Moneytree is a remote-first company, so you can work remotely from anywhere in Japan. Those who wish to work from their Tokyo office are allowed to (as long as there's not a state of emergency in effect), but it's also fine to work 100% remotely. Their hybrid approach ensures that everyone can work in the style that allows them to feel secure and safe.

Even once COVID-19 is no longer a concern, Moneytree intends to continue their full remote policy.
