Moneytree is looking to help people & trusted organizations unlock the power of data for good. Our financial data platform, Moneytree LINK, enables individuals and businesses to share their confidential financial information with trusted third parties, such as financial institutions and fintech service providers.

Our technology is used by major banks, accounting software companies and fintech companies in Japan, including Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group, TKC and Yayoi, and other enterprise clients. Our apps are also used and trusted by millions of individuals.

The LINK Data team plays a vital role in achieving this mission by connecting our data platform to over 2600 data sources across Japan. As a LINK Data Engineer, you will work on designing and developing ETL software to power our data aggregation system: the technology at the heart of our fintech platform.

If you like hard problems, consider yourself rational, love to impact large numbers of people, are passionate about quality and hate seeing imperfections, we trust you to bring your attention to detail and creative problem-solving to bear on the challenging data problems in this team.

We give you the freedom and responsibility to do good work while we provide the best tools and empower you to use them well. We are flexible, supportive, and meritocratic. We are an international and diverse team. We offer a healthy work-life balance, work together to help you grow professionally, and reward your talent and positive attitude.

Join us if you:

  • Look for novel solutions to build resilient, fault-tolerant systems.
  • Enjoy the challenge of pulling out signal from noise and turning it into actionable data.
  • Want to build a platform relied on by millions of users for financial insights, while protecting their privacy.
  • Are thinking beyond short-term needs and think about challenges the team will face in 6 months to 1 year.
  • Are a fan of constant improvement and automation, and you hate doing the same operation twice.
  • Like to challenge the status quo and generate ideas for improving the team.

You will spend time on the following:

  • Developing our ETL pipelines and tooling around them.
  • Building out a robust web scraping and data parsing system.
  • Identifying opportunities and lead initiatives to make our ETL process more resilient and fault-tolerant.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and pairing with your peers on a regular basis.
  • Developing a culture of continuous improvement in the team.
  • Building tooling to accelerate resolution of or prevent recurrence of common failure cases in the data extraction stage.
  • Assisting the team with inbound support work and improving our systems as part of that work.

What we’re looking for:

  • You have experience using TypeScript and JavaScript in a professional setting.
  • You can write high-quality, well-tested code and you are familiar with both OOP and functional programming.
  • You have experience writing code and delivering software using state-of-the-art CI/CD practices, and operating that software in a production environment.
  • A background in data processing techniques and proven experience in building and maintaining ETL pipelines for a wide range of data sources.
  • You can compare implementation options and make the correct technical and cost tradeoffs to deliver an optimal solution.
  • You always advocate for technical excellence, but you are open to change when needed.
  • You will communicate in English on a daily basis.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails, AWS CloudFormation, Step Functions, SWF or Heroku.
  • You have worked on web scraping, parsing and data extraction of both dynamic SPA and static HTML web pages.
  • JLPT N3 or better Japanese language proficiency.

Location & Benefits

  • Working remotely from anywhere in Japan
  • Flexible work hours without core time (Common working hours: 10am - 4pm at JST)
  • Employee stock option program participation.
  • Referral bonus of 250,000 JPY per successful hire.
  • Communication allowance (10,000 JPY/month).
  • Remote work allowance (3000 JPY/month).
  • 20 annual paid leave.
  • 10 annual sick and care leave.

Moneytree is a fin-tech start-up founded by three foreign entrepreneurs in Tokyo. Their Moneytree Link product provides a "utility layer for connecting financial services" that serves banks and other fin-tech companies, but they also have a popular consumer app that helps people manage their finances. They're a truly international company with an English-first environment and a high technical skill level for engineers, so it sounds like a really great place to work!
