Position Overview
TableCheck, Japan’s leading restaurant reservation management platform, is looking for an Associate Design Engineer to join its Innovation Division and help shape its B2B and B2C product suite.
As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for all UX and UI design for TableCheck’s products. By understanding and adapting your design process to reduce friction with development teams, your role will also ensure the design quality of shipped products and to limit design debt, while fostering an effective collaboration between design and engineering.
What you will do:
- Collaborate closely with a Senior Design Engineer and software engineers, product managers, designers as well as other roles on product design for features across TableCheck’s suite of products
- Create comprehensive and consistent user flows, high-fidelity UI mock-ups and simple prototypes, all the way to dev-ready annotated designs
- Participate in user research, brainstorm sessions and product specifications phases along with other team members and stakeholders
- Work with software engineers to align design intent with technical feasibility
- Ensure the quality of shipped products by providing clear and actionable design QA support to developers
- Iterate on designs using feedback from users, team members and stakeholders
- Help maintain and improve our in-house UI kit
- Learn and grow with like-minded people who aim at bridging the gap between design and code
Our ideal profile…
- …has a passion not only for creative design, but also for building real-life products that are actually shipped;
- …is a self-starter: you are able to take initiatives to spontaneously pick up new things without needing anyone’s approval;
- …ships first, iterates later: you move fast, are able to identify pain points and find solutions, but you are also not afraid to propose efficient compromises for the team to move forward when necessary;
- …is interested in understanding how things work, and open to learning more of what is going on outside the design bubble - as team players, everyone ultimately works on shipping the same product, regardless of our respective roles!
Qualifications
- 0-2 years of experience in product design, UX/UI design or a related field
- Knowledge of front-end development basics (HTML/CSS, JS or React as bonuses)
- Portfolio that shows thoughtful product design skills, and/or relevant front-end development experience in relation to UX/UI design
- Knowledge of accessibility and responsive product design best practices
- Experience with design tools like Figma or similar
- A curious mindset and a desire to collaborate with all roles within a team
- Clear communication skills and the ability to receive and give constructive feedback in a multi-cultural environment
- Business-level English proficiency
Bonuses & nice-to-haves
- Experience with CSS animations or micro-interaction design
- Experience working in a start-up environment
- Familiarity with the F&B industry
- Any Japanese language skill
About TableCheck
TableCheck is changing the online reservation business by connecting millions of diners around the world to the restaurants they love. We help diners make restaurant reservations, and we help merchants manage table inventory, enrich dining experiences, and visualize multi-property analytics to gain insights into restaurant performance. Our goal is to both inform and delight.
We're remote-first, having an asynchronous style working, with employees spread throughout Asia and Europe working on the same team. As such, communication and documentation are in our blood. We look for and write about signals in the noise which enables us to constantly learn and adapt, and we expect members of our teams to constantly follow up with questions and updates to keep everyone in the loop.
Our engineering team communicates in English, and so we generally don't require Japanese skills. We also welcome applicants currently outside Japan. If you want to relocate here, we can sponsor your visa. We're also open to remote candidates who do not plan to relocate.
