Head of Robotics System Engineering, Humanoid Team
- Tokyo
- Partial Remote
- Full-time
- May 28, 2026
Position Summary
As the Head of Robotics System Engineering,âŻHumanoid Team, you will own both the strategic leadership and handsâon engineering of the fullâstack software platform that powers our generalâpurpose humanoid robots -âŻinitially focused on a dualâarm mobile manipulator and expanding to humanoids.
You will translate ambitious product goals into a scalable, safetyâcertified architecture that spans everything from lowâlevel motor control loops to cloudâconnected autonomy services. You will scale the systemsâengineering organization from advanced prototype through volume production, combining teamâbuilding, budget oversight, supplier strategy, and productâlifecycle management with deep individual technical contributions.
Key Responsibilities
LeadershipâŻ&âŻManagement
Robotics System Product Management
- Define, document, and deliver endâtoâend system requirements (functional, safety, performance, cybersecurity) that balance customer value, business viability, and technical feasibility. Shepherd those requirements through design, verification, validation, and release so they become robust, shipping products.
- Partner tightly with Hardware, Controls, Teleoperation, AI, Cloud Infrastructure, Production, and Service teams to align every development stage from concept to field deployment.
Roadmap PlanningâŻ&âŻExecution
- Build and maintain a crossâfunctional roadmap that covers embedded firmware, realâtime middleware, highâlevel autonomy, and cloud integration.
- Secure headâcount, allocate resources, control budgets, and remove roadblocks until the system is in customers’ sites -âŻon schedule and within quality and cost targets.
System Architecture & Design
- LowâLayer Control -âŻOwn architecture for motorâdrive firmware (e.g., BLDCâŻFOC, PID gain tuning), highârate sensor I/O, and deterministic CANâFD / RSâ485 / RSâ422 / I2C etc communications between custom PCBs and the Jetson main computer.
- MidâLayer Control -âŻDesign and implement ROSâŻ2 control stacks (ros2_control), safety observers, and mission state machines that seamlessly switch between Teleoperation, Autonomous, and VisionâLanguageâAction (VLA) modes. Provide ultraâlowâlatency video and command streaming for teleop and VLA.
- HighâLayer Control -âŻIntegrate MoveItâŻ2 motion planning, wholeâbody controllers, Localisation, teleoperation UIs, and cloud orchestration services. Ensure tight coupling with ML inference pipelines and fleetâmanagement backâends.
- System Integration & Validation -âŻDrive hardwareâinâtheâloop (HIL) and softwareâinâtheâloop (SIL) testbeds, field acceptance testing to guarantee reliability, safety, and performance at scale.
ProjectâŻ&âŻStakeholder Management
- Translate stakeholder needs (customers, business, hardware, production, service) into clear systemâlevel requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Track critical path, manage risk, and communicate status to executives and crossâfunctional partners.
Qualifications
Professional Experience
- Experience of leading multiâdisciplinary robotics software or systemsâengineering teams (or equivalent techâlead experience with clear peopleâmanagement potential).
- Demonstrated P&L or budget responsibility for productionâgrade robotic system programs.
- Proven track record of shipping complex robotics software (beyond PoC) that operates reliably in realâworld customer environments.
Technical Skills
- Expert in ROSâŻ2 ecosystem (ros2_control, rclcpp, DDS, MoveItâŻ2).
- Deep understanding of embedded control (BLDCâŻFOC, PID), realâtime Linux, and deterministic fieldâbus protocols (CANâFD, RSâ485 and common embedded protocols for sensors).
- Strong background in distributed systems, networking (gRPC, WebRTC, RTSP)
- Proficiency in C++⯠and Python
- Familiarity with functionalâsafety design patterns, formal verification, and cybersecurity hardening.
Soft Skills & Culture Fit
- Ownership mentality -âŻtakes responsibility for outcomes and proactively solves problems.
- Userâcentric mindset -âŻbalances technical elegance with customer value and operational practicality.
- Comfortable in a highâperformance, highâaccountability culture (strong upside for results; demotion for underâperformance).
- Excellent communication skills in English; Japanese proficiency is a plus.
