About the Company

Chemican is a cloud-based SaaS platform that helps manufacturers manage chemical substances in their products. In Japan’s manufacturing industry—often the backbone of the country—chemical management remains highly manual, complex, and under-digitized.

Incorrect chemical handling can lead to serious consequences: environmental pollution, health issues, and industrial accidents. To prevent such incidents, companies are legally required to track and evaluate the chemical components used in their products. Yet many still rely on manual work by a few specialists.

Our mission is to change this. We're bringing DX to the chemical industry through a powerful SaaS platform powered by AI and automation, helping companies transition to safer and more efficient operations.

About the Product

Chemican combines cutting-edge AI and deep chemical industry expertise. We’ve already been adopted by major enterprise clients in Japan, and we are preparing for global expansion.

We focus on eliminating inefficiencies in chemical substance management—an area still dominated by paper-based workflows.

Role Overview

Due to regulatory shifts (including Japan’s major amendment to the Industrial Safety and Health Act in 2024) and increasing global demand for safer chemical handling, our platform is rapidly gaining traction.

We’re looking for an AI Engineer with expertise in document processing—particularly structuring unstructured PDF data (e.g., invoices, contracts, or technical documents)—to join our team and lead key initiatives in collaboration with our CTO.

This role is especially exciting for those who want to apply document understanding and generative AI technologies in a real-world, high-impact SaaS product.

What You’ll Work On

You’ll be working on the following initiatives:

Intelligent PDF Parsing for SDS (Safety Data Sheets)

  • High-accuracy OCR and layout analysis from PDFs (English, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish)
  • Extracting structured data from complex layouts with tables and multicolumn formats
  • Normalizing data based on SDS formats and regulations across different countries
  • Experience with parsing non-chemical PDFs (invoices, contracts, etc.) will be highly relevant

AI Agent Development for Chemical Industry

  • Integrating diverse data sources: SDS documents, chemical substance databases, legal documents, PPE catalogs, etc.
  • Developing agents using frameworks like LangChain
  • Combining AI with expert-reviewed knowledge for practical task support

Trust Evaluation for AI Inference

  • Building algorithms to quantify confidence levels of AI outputs
  • Automating the review of high-confidence results
  • Creating feedback loops for improving model accuracy

Must-Haves

  • Professional experience with Python
  • Solid knowledge and hands-on experience in machine learning / deep learning
  • Experience in NLP projects
  • Experience in document parsing and structuring (e.g., invoices, contracts, tech docs)
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate in a team

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience developing systems using Generative AI / LLMs
  • Practical experience with OCR / document understanding
  • Experience building AI systems on cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, etc.)

  • Contributions to OSS or developer communities

Portrait of a Person

Ideal Candidate

  • Passionate about solving meaningful problems that help prevent pollution, health issues, and industrial accidents
  • Eager to bring new ideas into the world and impact society at scale
  • Curious and proactive about learning beyond your specialty
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently in a remote environment
  • Interested in helping a Japanese startup expand globally
