Job Description

We are working to provide the best financial services to users in Japan. We empower PayPay product by realizing efficient, stable and optimized storage services.
PayPay is looking for Cloud Platform Engineers who specialize in databases at scale on mission critical systems.

Main Responsibilities

Database operations, including monitoring, configuration management, upgrade, scaling, backup, and data migration.
Iterate on database operations to improve quality and efficiency.
Troubleshoot stability and performance problems.
Contribute to documentation for communicating knowledge, experience and for effective decision-making.
Research and test new tools in database ecosystems, and adopt them in PayPay Group.

Databases: Aurora, MySQL, PostgreSQL, TiDB, Redis, Valkey, DynamoDB
Infrastructure: AWS, Terraform, Jenkins, Ansible, Flyway
Monitoring: Victoria Metrics, Grafana, Prometheus
Collaboration: GitHub, Slack, Zoom, Jira, Confluence

Qualifications

More than 5 years of DBA experience with a minimum of 3 years MySQL or PostgreSQL experience.
More than 3 years of AWS experience in recent years.
Hands-on experience with Infra as Code (IaC - Terraform).
Interested in new technologies and willing to improve operational quality and efficiency.
Familiar with shell and programming languages for scripting (Python, Go, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in automating operations related to Database or AWS.
Familiarity with Jenkins, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes.
Working experience in a full remote environment.
Experience in operating distributed systems.
Experience working with NoSQL such as Redis, Valkey and DynamoDB.
Experience working with NewSQL databases (like TiDB).
Experience with DBs cost reduction and Disaster Recovery strategies.

Japanese Language Policy
At PayPay, there is a mixture of Japanese and English spoken. Around 80% of their product team’s discussions happen in English, and they have technical interpreters and translators on staff to facilitate any translation necessary. Some members can speak both English and Japanese, but some can only speak either English or Japanese.

PayPay doesn’t have an official shared language, but in practice English tends to be the primary language used for internal communications and technical discussions like code reviews.

Instead of requiring that everyone be able to speak a specific language, PayPay expects an ability to communicate with mutual respect and a drive to ensure that you’re understood. The product team values proactive communication highly.

Engineer Interview Process

- Application Review (English CV is required)
- Coding Test or Take Home Assignment (only applied to required positions)
