TableCheck, Japan's leading restaurant reservation management platform, is seeking a Product Manager with an engineering background and experience in payment systems. This hybrid role combines technical development expertise with product management responsibilities to drive our payment initiatives from start to finish. You will lead the full lifecycle of payment solutions - gathering requirements from stakeholders, designing technical architecture, implementing integrations with payment gateways, and iterating based on feedback. You'll serve as both the technical executor and the product expert for our payment infrastructure.

TableCheck has embraced remote work. As such, communication and documentation are in our blood. We look for and write about signals in the noise which enables us to constantly learn and adapt, and we expect members of our teams to constantly follow up with questions and updates to keep everyone in the loop. You will be working closely with members in Japan and supporting Japanese and SEA clients, so we require that you work in Japanese business hours.

Product Responsibilities

Lead requirements gathering with internal stakeholders
Define product specifications and scope
Coordinate with external stakeholders such as 3rd party payment gateway providers
Collaborate with the Engineering Manager on the roadmap and resource planning
Manage end-to-end product lifecycle
Build deep understanding of payment workflows across TableCheck's product suite

Technical Responsibilities

Provide technical documentation for payment processes
Design, architect, and implement payment solutions
Create and maintain connections with payment gateways
Develop secure and scalable backend payment solutions using Ruby on Rails
Write clean, maintainable code with comprehensive test coverage

Mandatory Skills

Product Skills

3+ years of experience in the payment space (payment gateways, payment processing, reporting)
Ability to build trust through collaboration and effective communication
Problem-oriented mindset that prioritizes understanding the "why" before the "how"
Ability to define and prioritize initiatives while working cross-functionally
Experience managing complex stakeholder relationships
Comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity
Work well under pressure, with proven experience on complex, time-critical projects

Technical Skills

5+ years of backend development using Ruby on Rails
3+ years of payment gateway integrations or payment system development
3+ years MongoDB or PostgreSQL
Strong understanding of software security principles
Experience with AI-based workflows (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, etc)
Experience with test-driven development

Recommended Skills

Familiarity with the F&B industry
Experience working in a start-up
Familiarity with Japanese culture
Strong communication skills in a multicultural environment

Language Skills

Business-level English required
Japanese is a plus, but not mandatory

Evaluation Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their technical skill, product thinking, and strength of their previous experience
Applicants will be asked to complete a small coding project and product design exercise for evaluation purposes

We help diners make restaurant reservations, and we help merchants manage table inventory, enrich dining experiences, and visualize multi-property analytics to gain insights into restaurant performance. We're remote-first, having an asynchronous style working, with employees spread throughout Asia and Europe working on the same team. As such, communication and documentation are in our blood. Our engineering team communicates in English, and so we generally don't require Japanese skills. We also welcome applicants currently outside Japan. If you want to relocate here, we can sponsor your visa. We're also open to remote candidates who do not plan to relocate.

Japanese Language Policy
TableCheck's official language is English, and we generally don't require Japanese skills for IT or engineering staff. We speak English at work and have many non-Japanese developers, but most staff outside of their engineering department is Japanese, so we consider Japanese ability to be a plus.
Visa Sponsorship
TableCheck offers visa support for both new applications and renewals. Additionally, for new hires from abroad we're often open to having applicants work remotely as a consultant while the visa application is in progress.
Paid Leave
TableCheck's vacation policy is in line with Japanese standards. We assume this means 10 days of paid time off during your first year with yearly increases according to Japanese law.

Engineer Interview Process
TableCheck's engineering interview process looks something like this:

Note: We may request more interviews if interviewers are not available on the same day.
Remote Work
TableCheck has a flexible remote work policy.
We don't have any hard rules about the number of in-office vs remote days per week are allowed. Instead we assume that each employee will work with their team and manager to do what's best for both themselves and the company.

Note: We welcome remote work from other countries as long as you can work between 10:00-19:00 JST (or within a few hours of this time).
Work style
TableCheck offers flex time with core hours of 11:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday.
