Job Description

TableCheck, Japan's leading restaurant reservation management platform, is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer. As a member of our SRE team you will own the technology stack and help support our scaling demands.

We run a robust and fault-tolerant infrastructure built on Amazon Web Services (AWS) with Terraform, Kubernetes, Helm, and an array of tools for CI/CD, logging, monitoring, and so on. We emphasize DevOps best practices such as agile, scrum, automation, and customer-centric improvements.

TableCheck has embraced remote work. As such, communication and documentation are in our blood. We look for and write about signals in the noise which enables us to constantly learn and adapt, and we expect members of our teams to constantly follow up with questions and updates to keep everyone in the loop.

Responsibilities include:

Build and maintain a 24/7 production environment running on Kubernetes
Implementation of DevOps methodologies to improve IT team quality of life
Proactive system monitoring and configuration
Incident response
Mentoring and empowering team members

Mandatory Skills

Progressive experience including both software engineering and infrastructure / devops with at least 1 year as a technical lead
Current ability in at least one of the following languages: Ruby, Elixir, Scala, Go
Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Kubernetes
Configuration management (YAML / Bash)
Experience running production systems at large scale, and an understanding of the kinds of problems that can occur along with likely solutions

Optional Skills

Previous startup experience highly desired, with at least 1 year in a technical lead role
Security, PCI-DSS, GDPR, forensics, etc
Hashicorp stack (Terraform, Consul, Vault)

Language Skills

English is required. Japanese is nice to have, but optional.

Evaluation Criteria

We will evaluate candidates based on an interview and the strength of their previous experience.

Given the sensitive nature of this position, a background check will be required.

TableCheck is changing the online reservation business by connecting millions of diners around the world to the restaurants they love. We help diners make restaurant reservations, and we help merchants manage table inventory, enrich dining experiences, and visualize multi-property analytics to gain insights into restaurant performance. Our goal is to both inform and delight.

We're remote-first, having an asynchronous style working, with employees spread throughout Asia and Europe working on the same team. As such, communication and documentation are in our blood. Our engineering team communicates in English, and so we generally don't require Japanese skills. We also welcome applicants currently outside Japan. If you want to relocate here, we can sponsor your visa. We're also open to remote candidates who do not plan to relocate.

Japanese Language Policy
TableCheck's official language is English, and we generally don't require Japanese skills for IT or engineering staff. We speak English at work and have many non-Japanese developers, but most staff outside of their engineering department is Japanese, so we consider Japanese ability to be a plus.
Visa Sponsorship
TableCheck offers visa support for both new applications and renewals. Additionally, for new hires from abroad we're often open to having applicants work remotely as a consultant while the visa application is in progress.
Paid Leave
TableCheck's vacation policy is in line with Japanese standards. We assume this means 10 days of paid time off during your first year with yearly increases according to Japanese law.

Engineer Interview Process
TableCheck's engineering interview process looks something like this:
- Step 1: Resume Review by Hiring Manager

Note: We may request more interviews if interviewers are not available on the same day.
Remote Work
TableCheck has a flexible remote work policy.
We don't have any hard rules about the number of in-office vs remote days per week are allowed. Instead we assume that each employee will work with their team and manager to do what's best for both themselves and the company.

Note: We welcome remote work from other countries as long as you can work between 10:00-19:00 JST (or within a few hours of this time).
Work style
TableCheck offers flex time with core hours of 11:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday.
