About the Job

TableCheck, Japan’s leading restaurant reservation management platform, is seeking a Software Engineer specializing in custom backend solutions for enterprise clients. This role will drive integration and backend initiatives from start to finish. As a Software Engineer, you will lead the full lifecycle of backend projects — gathering requirements from clients and internal stakeholders, designing technical architecture, implementing third-party integrations, and iterating based on feedback. You’ll serve as both the technical executor and the integration expert for our enterprise-facing backend infrastructure.

We look for and write about signals in the noise which enables us to constantly learn and adapt, and we expect members of our teams to constantly follow up with questions and updates to keep everyone in the loop. You will be working closely with members in Japan and supporting enterprise clients across Japan and Southeast Asia, so we require that you work during Japanese business hours.

Technical Responsibilities

Design, architect, and implement backend solutions for enterprise clients.
Create and maintain integrations with third-party APIs and external systems.
Develop secure and scalable backend services using Ruby on Rails.
Write clean, maintainable code with comprehensive test coverage.
Provide technical documentation for integration processes and backend systems.

Mandatory Skills

5+ years of backend development experience, including 3+ years with Ruby on Rails and API-based systems integration.
Database experience with SQL or NoSQL systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
Strong understanding of software security principles.
Experience with AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, etc.).
Experience with test-driven development.

Recommended Skills

Familiarity with the F&B industry or reservation management systems.
Experience working in a start-up or fast-paced environment.
Familiarity with Japanese business culture.
Strong communication skills in a multicultural environment.
Japanese language skills are a plus but not mandatory.

Evaluation Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated based on their technical skills and the strength of their previous experience. Candidates will be asked to complete a small coding project and an integration design exercise for evaluation purposes.

We're remote-first, having an asynchronous style working, with employees spread throughout Asia and Europe working on the same team. As such, communication and documentation are in our blood. Our engineering team communicates in English, and so we generally don't require Japanese skills. We also welcome applicants currently outside Japan. If you want to relocate here, we can sponsor your visa. We're also open to remote candidates who do not plan to relocate.

Japanese Language Policy
TableCheck's official language is English, and we generally don't require Japanese skills for IT or engineering staff. We speak English at work and have many non-Japanese developers, but most staff outside of their engineering department is Japanese, so we consider Japanese ability to be a plus.
Visa Sponsorship
TableCheck offers visa support for both new applications and renewals. Additionally, for new hires from abroad we're often open to having applicants work remotely as a consultant while the visa application is in progress.
Paid Leave
TableCheck's vacation policy is in line with Japanese standards. We assume this means 10 days of paid time off during your first year with yearly increases according to Japanese law.

Engineer Interview Process
TableCheck's engineering interview process looks something like this:
- Step 1: Resume Review by Hiring Manager

- step 7: Job Offer
Note: We may request more interviews if interviewers are not available on the same day.
Remote Work
TableCheck has a flexible remote work policy.
We don't have any hard rules about the number of in-office vs remote days per week are allowed. Instead we assume that each employee will work with their team and manager to do what's best for both themselves and the company.

Note: We welcome remote work from other countries as long as you can work between 10:00-19:00 JST (or within a few hours of this time).
Work style
TableCheck offers flex time with core hours of 11:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday.
