Head of SEO

What you'll do

• Own non-brand organic acquisition across EN/JA/KO/ZH as a number, and decide which page types and which markets get the investment
• Set the index policy for auto-generated pages: what gets indexed, and where we stop spending crawl budget
• Fix technical SEO with engineering, with SSR as the foundation
• Own visibility in AI search (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity) as a measured channel
• Make the calls on team, tooling and outside partners, and build the team

How we work

• Small SEO team. Short path from decision to production
• You work directly with engineers, designers, PMs and analysts, without a ticket queue in between
• Engineering resource is allocated. You are a decision maker inside the team, not an advisor to it
• Reports to the Head of Growth
• Tokyo, on-site / remote hybrid. Team communication is in English, and Japanese is not required to work here
• Visa sponsorship available

Stack

• Frontend: React + TypeScript, Tailwind CSS
• Backend: Node.js + TypeScript, GraphQL, PostgreSQL
• SEO / Analytics: Google Search Console, Ahrefs, Amplitude, Snowflake

Requirements

• 6+ years in SEO, most of it technical, including a site of 100k+ URLs
• Experience with UGC, marketplace or database-driven sites, where pages are generated rather than written
• You can read and debug HTML, JSON-LD, HTTP status codes, canonical and hreflang yourself, and trace the gap between what a JavaScript framework renders and what Google actually sees
• You've analyzed server logs and changed a decision you had already made because of what they showed
• Track record of getting template or site architecture changes implemented through an engineering team. Migrations or large restructures welcome
• Basic SQL
• Able to define underspecified work yourself instead of waiting for direction
• Honest estimation, and early flagging when something is blocked or bigger than it looked
• English at native or fluent level (Japanese or Chinese a plus)
• Able to discuss the relationship between generative AI and creator communities calmly

Nice to have

• Experience running SEO experiments with the success threshold set in advance
• Experience running SEO across multiple languages, including non-Latin scripts
• Experience with programmatic page generation at the tens-of-thousands scale
• Japanese or Chinese language ability, or consumer product experience in the Japanese market
• Experience measuring or improving visibility in LLM-based search
• Interest in anime, otaku culture and creator communities. Interest in AI generation
