Engineering Manager - Realtime and Personalization

Your Role

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing team in our Tokyo office, working at the intersection of our Realtime and Personalization products. You will guide squads as they build AI-native components and industry-leading systems.

In this role, you will be the people leader for the Tokyo office and the delivery owner for squad-based projects. You will partner with Tech Leads to co-pilot projects, owning the "Who" and "When" of delivery while the Tech Lead owns the "What" and "How."

• People Leadership: Serve as the day-to-day management presence in Tokyo, ensuring team health, clarity, and career support.
• Project Delivery: Partner with Tech Leads, TPMs, and PMs to drive execution, taking joint ownership of timelines and milestones.
• Agile Process: Act as the primary owner of agile workflows, ensuring a predictable shipping cadence for cross-timezone squads.
• Global Collaboration: Champion an async-first model to bridge the gap between Tokyo and Vancouver teams effectively.
• Staffing: Assist in staffing full-stack squads optimized for end-to-end delivery across time zones.
• On-Call: Join the rotation as an escalation point for critical PagerDuty alerts.

About You

• Experience: 6+ years of backend engineering experience with 3+ years in people management.
• Distributed Teams: Proven ability to work with highly distributed teams across significant time zone differences.
• Leadership Style: A "person-first" leader who sets clear expectations and coaches with candor.
• Technical Familiarity: Knowledge of our stack (TypeScript, Kotlin, Rails, AWS) is a strong plus.
• Communication: Business-level English proficiency is required to communicate complex concepts to stakeholders.
• Culture Fit: Comfortable with Japanese engineering culture and ready to apply modern Agile methodology.
