Lead Robotics Control Engineer, Foundation Model Team
- Tokyo
- Partial Remote
- Full-time
- May 30, 2025
Position Summary
As a Lead Robotics Control Engineer, you will architect, design, implement, and deploy advanced control software for teleoperation and data-collection of mobile manipulators in real-world settings. You will focus on advanced teleoperation techniques (like bilateral control) to ensure precise, responsive command of physical robot hardware. Familiarity with ROS1/2, Jetson platforms along with real-world deployment experience (beyond simulation).
Key Responsibilities
-
System Architecture & Implementation
- Develop and integrate ROS1/2 packages to control mobile manipulators, ensuring smooth teleoperation.
- Implement bilateral (leader-follower) control algorithms that enable real-time force feedback.
- Work with Jetson platforms for motor control, sensor integration, and data streaming to/from the cloud.
-
Teleoperation & Data Collection
- Design robust communication approaches for remote operation with minimal latency and high reliability.
- Set up data-collection pipelines, logging sensor data and operator inputs for system improvements (potentially used in MLOps workflows).
-
Real-World Robot Deployment
- Transition control algorithms from simulation/testing environments to live robots, ensuring safety and performance.
- Collaborate with hardware teams to troubleshoot issues on-site, perform calibration, and fine-tune control parameters.
-
Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with engineers and researchers from out-of-company to drive the collaboration projects.
- Coordinate with the teleoperators and software team for seamless integration of front-end and back-end systems to maximize the efficiency of the data-collection process.
-
Continuous Optimization & Innovation
- Monitor key performance metrics (data-collection efficiency, latency, accuracy, stability) and implement improvements.
- Stay updated with state-of-the-art research in teleoperation, robotics control, and embedded systems for dexterous manipulation.
Qualifications
-
Technical Skills
- Expertise in ROS1/2: Significant experience deploying ROS in production environments, including node architecture, real-time control, and custom package development.
- Strong background in robot control (e.g., bilateral/leader-follower control, PID loops, FoC for BLDC motors), demonstrating an ability to handle complex, multi-degree-of-freedom robots.
- Proficiency with Jetson or similar embedded platforms, including sensor integration and low-level control of actuators (e.g., Dynamixel SDK).
- Proven track record of deploying and optimizing robotic systems in live (non-simulation) environments, with hands-on troubleshooting under constraints like network latency and hardware variability.
-
Professional Experience
- Demonstrated success in deploying real robot systems (not just simulation).
- Demonstrated ability to integrate hardware, software, and AI/ML components, addressing end-to-end system considerations (safety, reliability, performance)
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and optimize hardware-software integration under real-world conditions.
-
Soft Skills & Culture Fit
- Ownership mentality: Takes responsibility for outcomes and problem-solves proactively.
- User-Centric Mindset: Demonstrates the ability to understand how diverse stakeholders (including end users, partners, and internal teams) will interact with the product, envision optimal workflows, communicate these concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, and translate them into actionable technical requirements.
- Comfortable in a performance-driven environment (high rewards for results, potential demotion for underperformance).
- Communication skills in English; Japanese proficiency is a plus.
[IMPORTANT] Application Note
To help us evaluate your eligibility for this role, please provide concrete examples of your expertise in advanced robotics control, real-world deployments, and teleoperation/data-collection systems. Generic or unrelated work will not be considered. Specifically highlight:
- Advanced Control Solutions: Real-world implementations of bilateral/leader-follower control and force feedback, beyond simulation.
- Teleoperation & Data Collection: Robust pipelines for remote operation, sensor-data logging, and integration with AI/ML workflows.
Include:
- Portfolio & Demos: Links to code, videos, or technical overviews showcasing ROS1/2, Jetson platforms, and real-world optimization.
- References & Case Studies: Summaries or endorsements illustrating your track record of leading complex robotics projects.
Applications without specific, relevant examples of these capabilities will not move forward. We look forward to reviewing your concrete evidence of fit for this Foundation Model Team position.
