Job Description

Health-tech startup looking for an amazing seasoned python engineer

If you are an amazing python engineer looking for a chance to work in a field with great social impact, then keep reading!

This is a great opportunity to show your skills and shape up the culture and brand of our early stage medical startup.

If there is anything that the current global "health crisis" has taught us, is that we need to take care of our medical workers, so that they can take care of us.

This is how, at Aquila Systems, we embarked on a high flying journey to identify problems and deliver lean solutions to administrative tasks in healthcare. Our patent pending solution is helping medical practitioners to optimize and automate daily tedious tasks like staff assignments and schedules.

Requirements

We are looking for a seasoned full-stack engineer with experience in several areas outlined below. (with emphasis on the back-end python skills)

Core competencies

  • Back-end programming language: Python (at least 4~5 years experience with python is a must)
  • Familiarity with Django REST framework (experience with multi-tenancy is a plus)
  • Database design and management (MySQL, Postgresql)
  • Experience with system & unit testing
  • Familiarity with containerized deployment
  • Proficiency with Git
  • Good to have front-end experience with any of Vue, React, Angular, which would be a plus
  • Miscellaneous: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, web servers, cache servers
  • Japanese language proficiency is a plus. Our customers are medical facilities and our partners are local medical IT vendors. We use 100% Japanese to communicate outside the company. However, internally either English or Japanese is fine.

Soft skills

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and don't freak out
  • Willingness to learn new skills, have persistence and tenacity
  • Motivated to have a social impact

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and improvement of the existing code base
  • Data design/modeling and DB deployment of our solution
  • Design and creation of REST APIs
  • Integrating the front-end using created REST APIs
  • Ensure that the whole system is designed and built for speed and scalability
  • Write good, easy to understand code and documentation
  • Participate and take lead of technical meetings between us and our hospital clients or medical IT vendors (Japanese language proficiency is a nice to have skill)
  • Collaborate with the data science/engineering team in delivering new features

Salary

This is obviously negotiable when it comes to senior developers. One thing is certain, the engineer #1 joining will also benefit from a combination of stock options and common stock if he or she chooses so.

Aquila Systems is on a mission to make life easier for Japan's doctors. By applying AI technology, CEO George Radescu believes they can radically improve processes in the medical field and save medical professionals from stress and burnout.

After George saw the struggles of being a doctor first-hand through his wife (who had to quit due to burnout), he decided to do something about it. He set out to apply his 10+ years of data science experience to helping fix the administrative inefficiencies that plague hospitals in Japan. Their patent pending solution uses AI and machine learning to ease the burden of staff assignment and scheduling resources in acute care hospitals.

Aquila Systems is a young startup founded in 2019, so George is the only full-time employee, but the company has three medical experts working as advisors and a membership to Japan's Health Care Operations Research association. They have a few part-time employees as well.

They also already have paying customers, and just finalized a funding round that will open up ~18 months of runway for the company to grow their business.

This is a great opportunity to use technology to make a real impact on people's lives. Now's the time to get in on the ground floor and contribute to Aquila Systems' growth as one of the first employees!

Aquila Systems's policies during COVID-19 are as follows:

  • We are currently only able to consider candidates who are already in Japan.

  • 100% of the work can be done remotely and most of our discussions with our medical IT vendors will be done via video chat. However, from time to time we will have to go on site to engage the customer and ask for feedback. Our customers are university hospitals who have very strict policies and means to mitigate the risks associated with infections (especially during these times).
