Vue.js is an open-source JavaScript framework for building simple applications and user interfaces. Released in 2014, it’s one of the most popular JavaScript libraries out there today.

Vue.js was well received by the JavaScript community and quickly gained popularity because it’s easy to learn, simple to use, and it’s quite versatile.

If you’re curious about how well the JS library is liked in Japan and whether your skills translate to the job market here, I’ll give you all the details.

In this edition of our language guide series, I’ll take a deep dive into Vue.js development and explore the career prospects of Vue.js developers. I’ll tell you how popular the library is using our own data, and even give you tips on how to find a Vue.js job here.

Let’s go.

According to our own data, even though it’s not at the top of the list, Vue.js is still somewhat popular in Japan.

At Japan Dev, we have a vetting process for all of the companies we feature on our job board. The companies that do get selected are confirmed to offer the most modern pay, benefits, and practices. Over the years, our collaborations with these great companies in Japan and the many job listings we’ve featured on our job board have allowed us to collect essential data regarding the job market in Japan’s tech scene.

So, according to our data, Vue.js is the 15th most popular language or framework among the listings we’ve had on our job board. This ranking may seem low, but this means that Vue.js is the 15th most common skill that shows up on our job postings.

Here’s our full list:

As you can see above, despite coming in 15th place, Vue.js developers get paid more on average compared to some higher-ranking languages.

Considering its niche position, and the fact that it’s the second most popular JavaScript framework after React, I’d say the career prospects of Vue.js developers are safe in Japan,  especially since it has been gaining more popularity in the country in recent years.

Now that you know how popular Vue.js is in Japan, you’re probably wondering about the financial prospects or whether it’s feasible to live in Japan as a Vue.js developer. Let’s talk about this in more detail.

Vue.js Salaries in Japan: The Financial Prospects of Vue.js Developers

The data we’ve accumulated over the years also allowed us to find out the average annual salary for each programming language, so the numbers you see are all based on real data we’ve received.

Vue.js developers earn a median salary of ¥8.7M per year. Judging by the number alone, this puts Vue.js in the average range among our top languages list.

With that said, it should be noted that, unlike many other items on our list, Vue.js isn’t a programming language on its own, as it builds upon JavaScript and HTML. Considering this, it seems that learning Vue.js is worthwhile, and those skilled at it shouldn’t have a problem finding a job at a good company.

Speaking of jobs, let’s see how companies use the framework in their daily operations.

Vue.js in Action: How Is Vue.js Used in Japan?

Vue.js is widely used for tasks like enhancing static HTML and building single-page applications, and these are all relevant applications for it in Japan as well.

Companies use Vue.js most prominently for building front-end web applications. In this regard, its use cases are similar to those of other web frameworks like React and Angular JS.

In terms of what type of companies use it, it’s safe to say that startups and international companies use it the most. More specifically, younger, smaller startups tend to use Vue.js more.

As the general demographic is startups and international companies, this also means that the jobs you’ll find will be the better-paying ones. In Japan, these two types of companies tend to have better practices, better pay, and a modern work environment compared to traditional Japanese companies.

Now that you know the value of learning Vue.js, let’s look at some great companies in Japan that use it and hire Vue.js developers.

Tips for Finding Vue.js Jobs in Japan

The first step is to check our Vue.js jobs page regularly. As I explained, we select the companies we feature on our job board through a personal vetting process, and we update the listings frequently.

I especially recommend this if you’re new to Japan because you never know which companies are worth your trust. You can read up on my post on black companies to learn about what types of companies to avoid, but things may not be as clear in certain cases. So, our job board can serve as a filter of sorts in this regard.

However, if you want to familiarize yourself with the industry and find opportunities, this may take some networking. My post on the top tech conferences in Japan is a great starting point for this, but do check out my local tech event guides for Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Kyoto as well.

Lastly, another good way to get involved with the Vue.js community in Japan is by contributing to open-source projects. For this, my guide to Japan’s open-source scene should be your go-to, as I included some good communities in there, as well as tips for how to get involved.
